Teacher Nicci Garlic, 34, and her husband, Kelsie Garlic, 33, who spent almost a decade trying to get pregnant without success, welcomed their first newborn, Charlie, on February 2 at a hospital in Illinois, United States. This is the incredible story of the arrival of her “miracle baby”.
“A miracle baby that we didn’t even know existed,” Kelsie said in an interview about how he found out his wife was pregnant and gave birth to their son in a span of 8 to 10 hours. A diametrically opposite time from the several years they’ve been trying to become parents since they got married in 2014.
At that time, the couple had tried I.V.F ᴛʀᴇᴀᴛᴍᴇɴᴛs, but it didn’t work for her. After three years, they finally accepted what it was and decided to become foster parents. Nicci and Kelsie foster two blood-related brothers in 2020 under their guardianship.
Nicci’s last period was in 2019, so the news of her pregnancy was even more surprising. On February 1, 2022, Nicci left the school early to go to a health center for intense stomach ᴘᴀɪɴ. Kelsie froze in sʜᴏᴄᴋ as Nicci told him she was pregnant and in labor. She had been carrying their baby for over eight months. Speaking of when he heard the news, Kelsie remembered, “I’ve never, ever felt this way. And granted, it’s my first newborn.”
But, what was at first joy became panic as Nicci began experiencing ᴘʀᴇᴇᴄʟᴀᴍᴘsɪᴀ. The doctors were afraid that the baby could ᴘᴀss ᴀᴡᴀʏ and that the mom could have a sᴛʀᴏᴋᴇ. For this reason, the doctors chose to perform a C-sᴇᴄᴛɪᴏɴ just 10 hours apart when they found out.
Luckily, little Charlie Keith Garlic was born healthy at 12:25 a.m. on February 2, 2022 at Northwestern Medicine Hospital.
“We have been blessed time and time again and hope to continue giving back our boundless love. This experience has been unbelievable, and I cannot stop weeping with joy,” he said.
While ecstatic, the speed and the fact that they had no time to prepare for a newborn left the two in a financially unsafe place.
“From being childless a few years ago to a family of five, with a 4-year-old, a 6-year-old, and now a newborn, my wife and I couldn’t be happier, but we are very scared about our financial future and we are asking for help,” Kelsie added.
Kelsie Garlic has created a page on GoFundMe for this, which up to now has already reached the sum of 47 thousand dollars.
